SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.91 g, 9 h), circa 430-420. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing simple earring and necklace with a pendant, and with her hair bound by an ampyx in the front and a sphendone in the back; around, four dolphins. Boehringer 703 (V345/R481). Beautifully toned. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with the typical die break on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
